What a wonderful day, full of variety and even a little surprise! This morning we had amazing humpback activity. One humpback was rolling in the kelp, and our other vessel, the Eagle XXXI, was excited to see a humpback spy hopping and breaching. We even got to see a couple pectoral fins and tail slaps!
Some other marine mammals we viewed this morning included a few active Dall’s porpoise, a possible minke whale off White Cliffs, 30-40 harbour seals and a couple sea lions!
This afternoon we had 2 unidentified humpbacks, along with “Conger” and “Cutter”. The big surprise this afternoon was the appearance of another matriline of Orcas in the area, the A30′s!
Not only did their appearance in the area surprise us, they had great vocals and a new calf! We had some great photo opportunities of some spy hops, tail slaps, belly rolls and the calf breached. It was a very active day on the water.
Some other marine wildlife we saw this afternoon included lots of Dall’s porpoise, 20 harbour seals, 5 pacific white sided dolphins, and 1 stellar sea lion.
The bird activity was pretty fantastic as well, some of the birds we saw today included: 100′s of rhinoceros auklets, 20 common murres, lots of bald eagles, and 100′s of northern phalaropes!
