Thursday, July 5 – MV Lukwa

A super deluxe day on the Lukwa today! It was one of those special days where weather conditions were perfect and there were lots of active marine mammals in the area! We began our day with two sightings of humpback whales.

One of our naturalists, Sarah captured some fantastic pictures of the humpback whales doing dives and fluking! We were also thrilled to spot two humpbacks in the afternoon. Breathtaking sights for everyone on board! Other marine mammal sightings today included lots Dall’s porpoises and approximately 30 harbour seals. Guests also observed lots of bald eagles fishing on both our morning and afternoon trips.

Approximately 700 very active Pacific white-sided dolphins visited the Lukwa this afternoon! It was definitely a treat for our guests and crew to watch six dolphins breaching out of the water! Simply marvelous! A wonderful day for bird watching as well. Bird sightings included rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots, two belted kingfishers, 10 northern phalaropes, and one pelagic cormorant.

We were absolutely amazed to observe brown pelicans soaring over the Lukwa on our afternoon trip. Brown pelicans are very rare, and in Stubbs Island Whale Watching’s 30 year history only one pelican has ever been sighted on one of our tours before! Definitely an exciting moment for our guests and crew!
